How do root canals look?

2 Root Canals + 4 fillings... will they hurt?

  • Hi, I have four dental appointments in May to perform Root Canals and fillings on my teeth. The first I assume is for both root canals, the second for two fillings, the third for two fillings and a clean and polish for the fourth. My question is, are they going to hurt? I'm a really nervous patient when it comes to the dentist, and I hate the needle! Will they be able to give me both laughing gas and the anaesthetic if I ask them? It would make me feel a lot more comfortable if I had both. Do Root canals hurt bad? Are fillings the same as they were years ago? I had a bad experience as a child.

I have had a few root canals, about 7 I think, I know that sounds awful, I clean my teeth and my mouth is healthy but no one can understand why I have problems! Anyway, I am sure you know but a root canal is where your root is cleaned out and filled, they are also called root fillings. They do not hurt at all, if they do, you have not had enough anaesthetic, ask for more, it is normally an injection, which does hurt but just for a few moments, it is a very sharp pain and can make your eyes water. My dentist normally does root canals in stages, it normally takes about 3 hours in total. Normally your tooth gets drilled and cleaned out, then a temporary filling is put in, mine have usually been left for at least a week because my teeth have a history of getting reinfected. It is safe to leave temporary fillings for a long time, like a few months, it wont be a problem but it is worth noting that the filling wont be as hard as a permanent one, one of mine sank into my tooth once, it didn't hurt and only took a minute to fix, so don't panic. Anyway, at the next appointment, my dentist takes the temporary filling out, cleans the tooth again and puts the proper filling in. Each time normally takes about an hour and a bit, you are numbed each time. You tend to get a few x rays too to check that it looks right. I would guess, although it will depend how big your root canals will be and how your dentist works, that all four, or at the very least two will be for the root work, unless they are really long appointments. Once your anaesthetic wears off, it will feel uncomfortable for a while, maybe a day. Speak to your dentist but mine always recommends taking paracetamol and ibuprofen together for a few doses, he normally gives me them before I leave the surgery. Once, he banged my jaw while cleaning a root, it really, really hurt for a few days after the surgery, he warned me it would. Just remember, no matter how much it hurts, the pain will be gone eventually. Trust me,I have a tooth ache which has me made scream and my face swell up but the dentist fixed it. Only certain dentists can give gas, most can't do it unless you plan before hand and sometimes you have to go to hospital to have it done. Some dentists specialise in nervous patients and can offer sedation. I don't know if this is available on the NHS. Normal fillings are normally fine, take a short while and don't hurt too much after. Once you have had your roots filled, your teeth tend to hurt if you are coming down with a cold.

During the surgery, you will only feel pressure as the Dentist has to use a fair amount of strength to pull the teeth from the jaw bone. But after the anesthetic wears off, there will be a fair amount of pain. You can take paracetamol for the pain. Fillings are not the same as they used to be years ago. They are very straight foward. You can also ask for a general anesthetic for the root canals, if you are afraid. It may cost more, though.

I had two fillings (really deep ones) about 6 months ago and it was fine! I was nervous about the needle but if you ask they can put a numbing gel on first and you literally don't feel it at all. And once that's done, the fillings will be totally painless. Worst part is the way the noisy drill reverberates but that's not painful, just annoying. I think I need root canal soon so I can't help too much with that as I've never had it before but from what I've heard from friends and family it's just like a filling, completely numb with the anesthetic, maybe slightly more painful to recover from but nothing too bad. Find a good dentist and you'll be fine :)

I've never had a root canal, sorry :( But I can tell you that fillings are a piece of cake. The only thing you feel is when they give you the numbing shot first. It feels like a bee sting but I swear it lasts *maybe* three seconds, then your whole face goes numb! If you want laughing gas they can give it to you, if the office has it. (Although I never felt a difference with/without laughing gas, but that might just be me) Fillings are just annoying because once the numbing wears off, it goes in patches so some of your gums are numb and some aren't... it's really weird! Just be sure to not bite your cheeks accidentally-- you wouldn't be able to tell but you would definitely feel it once the numbing agents wear off. Just relax whenever you go. Whenever they get ready to give you the shot, DON'T look at the needle. It looks really intimidating and scary if you accidentally see it, but with how scary it looks the pain is really small. Anyway good luck!
