How painful are braces?

I'm getting BRACES! What do I do?

  • My dentist said I needed BRACES! I'm excited and super scared at the same time... I have too many teeth and I need more room for my adult teeth to come in. I've asked all my friends who has had braces or has braces right now. Will it hurt? What's going to happen? I'm super scared. How long does it take? I also need some help with the color(s). As you can see, I'm bugging out! Next week, I'm going to the orthodontist. My dad said he's just going to talk to me about braces... I still wanna know more about it! Also, how long will it take and IS THERE BLOOD? Well, please help me out.. How long does it take? On a scale of 1-10 how much does it hurt? Can I still eat regular food? And any tips you have once I get braces... As you can see I am curious and REALLY SUPER SCARED. I go to school so when I get braces I think I need to pack a lunch for school... Please tell me what I can eat and can't eat when I first get my braces on! I don't want to hurt my braces and eat the wrong foods that can harm my braces. Okay I'm back. How many appointments does it take for your braces to get put on? (When its final and over with.) Just saying. I wanted to know if its all in one appointment or not. And what are spacers? Also my friend said that the orthodontist but this metal thing under her tongue and it really hurt... What's the most painful/ most annoying part of having braces? Thanks... Oh and any other thing you guys can tell me about braces! Thanks!

It is much better to get braces when you're at school, i'm 19 at the moment and i had mine when i was 16, and basically everybody had them, which was a big relief! Firstly you have spacers put in which put a gap in between your back teeth on both sides, bottom and top sets, they're 4 spacers overall and i'd say these caused the most pain for me and you only have them in for about 2 weeks, You have these on so the braces can be attached to the backs. They're not exactly really painful but are more sensitive so it hurts to eat where the spacers are. But after those 2 weeks they will put the braces on, You have to hold a tube between your teeth which sucks all the moisture from your mouth *I RECOMMEND YOU WEAR LIP GLOSS* :D because your lips get really dry. But the tube basically just sits in your mouth and you wont feel it because your mouth is just in one place the whole time! The whole process is actually really boring! They put the glue on your teeth and then secure the brackets of the braces (the big metal parts) on with this laser machine but you cant feel a thing! in fact my mouth went numb because it was in the same place for the whole time. It didn't even take long. Anyway after they glue the brackets on, they will put the wires in, this feels uncomfortable but doesn't hurt. They then need to secure the wire to the brackets with this clamp thing but its small, however some people find this bit painful but i didn't feel a thing. When i say painful i mean more uncomfortable and it's abit like "ooh okay" but i wouldn't worry about it! They'll book you to come back 3 months later and then every 3 months you'll have them tightened if all is going well. They do this by taking the wires off and putting tighter ones in and clamping them again. About a day after you get the braces and a day after you get them tightened they will feel uncomfortable and abit unbearable to eat so i recommend you eat really soft foods like soup! Also after you get your braces done they'll give you a leaflet about what you cannot eat, (mine said pizza and toast but i still ate it) you'll also get a pack of brushes, mouth wash, etc. Oh and this wax which you can put on the brackets if they rub against your gums. (: Having them taken off doesn't hurt either they just use the laser and remove them. You may have some glue left but they'll book you in again to take that off. I only have mine on for 7 months because it went so well and i'm so pleased with them! Hope i helped and good luck, you wont regret it! xx

Will it hurt? Getting them on doesn't hurt, but it hurts for a few days after you ge them. It's not too painful, more like annoying pain. Painkillers should ease the pain. Don't thnik about you braces too much when you get them - it hurts more if you're constantly thinking about it. Just occupy yourself with something. Most people say that wax helps too, but I haven't tried it. What's going to happen? Your dentist will put some plastic thing in your mouth so they can acces all of yor teeth. Afer that they're gonna glue on a bracket, dry the glue with lamp and do the same thing with all of the brackets. Then they try on the metallic rings that go on your first molars, and then glue them. Also, if there's not enough space for any of the brackets or rings, they'll put spacers. Those are little blue rubber that go beween your teeth to create some space. They sometimes put spacers a few days before brackets and wires too. After the brackets and rings are glued on they put in a wire, and that's it. There's no blood btw. :) How long does it take? Not sure about this. About an hour or so. :) On a scale of 1-10 how much does it hurt? It was like a 3/10 for me, but it mostly depends on your pain tollerance. Can I still eat regular food? Well for the first few days eating might hurt, so eat things you don't have to bite and chew much, like mashed potatoes, rice, soup. Also try to bite with your premolars, cause it hurts less than biting with fron teeth. After the pain is gone you can eat normally. Just don't chew gums. Don't eat too much caramels (I once broke the metallic ring on my first molar eating one) and when you eat chocolate take small pieces and melt it in your mouth if it's hard (broke another metallic ring on chocolate). :) How many appointments does it take for your braces to get put on? Honestly I'm not sure. I knew I need braces almost a year before I got them. I needed to get four of my baby teeth out and wait till the permanent ones grow, and it really took long, especially for upper canine one. Anyways I don't know about this, don't remember too well. :) And what are spacers? I said above that those are rubber things that go between your teeth to create space. I had them for one night, and it hust pretty bad. :) What's the most painful/ most annoying part of having braces? For me it was spacers. :) About the colors, I like light blue. Also pink and red are nice. :)

ok little one calm down. now im speaking from my experience with braces. yes braces hurt AFTER they are on. they do not hurt to be put on. its uncomfortable getting fitting for your braces because they will take a fitting of your whole mouth. your teeth will hurt up to several weeks after you have them on and you will get sores in your mouth from adjusting to wearing them. they rub against your inside of mouth so you will have to you use dental wax to help relieve that. but its not that bad. now you will have to be careful with what you eat. they say no gum, popcorn, chips..etc (you know, the good stuff) because certain foods can pop off your brackets..then it cost to replace those. you will need to eat soft foods for a short time so it doesnt hurt. but i will tell you this, IF YOU DONT TAKE CARE OF YOUR TEETH WHILE IN BRACES....THE OUTCOME WILL NOT BE PRETTY. most kids dont brush like they should and the cavities will develope around the brackets. brush brush brush. i was told not to use toothpicks but it drove me crazy to have food in my teeth or braces so i found some picks that my dentist said i could use. they are called "the doctor's brushpicks" i still use them now. i love them. now as far as colors..pickout your school colors or your favorite colors. i loved that part. just dont pick out white or lite yellow. white fades and makes your teeth look dirty. good luck to you and i know you will love the outcome and the beauty after you get them off. you will look like a completely different person.

I know this question was asked a long time age, but I had something to say. I'm getting braces in 7 days, and my spacers are in. THEY ARE COMPLETELY PAINLESS. It just feels like a piece of meat stuck I between your teeth

It wont hurt when they're getting put on, but your teeth will ache for a couple of days after and they'll kind of feel like they're really weak and wobbly like they might fall out (at least, mine did) It takes about 40 minutes to put them on, just bring your iPod and it'll be over in no time. They put metal things around your back teeth that you have to bite down on so they're in place and that feels really weird and hurts a little bit, but don't stress over it. There's no blood. You can still eat most regular food, but after you get them on you'll probably only be able to eat soft things like ice cream and soup for a while. When you get your braces on they'll give you a list of what you ca eat, what you can eat, and what you really shouldn't eat so don't worry about that just yet. They're put on in one appointment, but you have to go through getting molds of your teeth and getting spacers, which as far as I can tell are just like little bands of rubber they put in between some of your teeth so they can fit on the metal things that go on your back teeth, they get taken out before your braces go on. So it took me about 3 or 4 appointments to actually get the braces on. I don't know what your fried is talking about with the metal thing under her tongue, I don't think that happened with me or maybe I just don't remember. I think the most painful thing about them is getting them tightened every month or so, but after each month it doesn't hurt as much. Also some of the wires can stick into your cheeks and irritate your mouth but they give you wax to put over it if it gets really annoying.

This isn't a big deal, most people nowadays get braces. It will ache for the first couple of days, there will be no blood unless you do something stupid, the braces will help your teeth come in properly and stay proper, you can eat regular food, but at first for a while you won't want to; you'll probably get a lecture and/or paper on what not to do and proper care. Don't get yellow or brown braces, if you're nervous ask for clear or something, they change them every month, and spacers space your teeth, whereas braces space them, make them straiaght, and allign them. The length of time they take will depend on your teeth.

From personal experience, I can honestly tell you that It does not really hurt. The dentist will put wire and other stuff.Your teeth will move, in order for them to be straight. Also, you get to choose the colors. The colors are for the rubber bands that go into this metal thingy. No there is no BLOOD. The process depends on each individual. Some take longer than others. I took two years. On a scale from 1-10 it's a 4. I think the pain only gets felt when they take them off. It's a 7. You should not chew gum because it can get stuck. You can eat any foods, really. It's not much of a difference. The most painful thing about brcaes is when they changed the wire.
