Transferring college and receiving new loans, do I need a new mpn?

  • Before I continue I know I should be calling the school and asking them firsthand but in all honesty I am fed up with their beating around the bush answers, constant hang ups, and just the people who know diddly squat, but somehow work there answering phones, about my questions. I will be speaking to them in person tomorrow (later today as it is 1:36 am at the momment) so in the mean time I just want your opinion. So I recently transferred from my local community college, starting the spring quarter in a week or so, to a 4 year Cal state university. Prior to the CC I was in a 4 yr university where I received 1 loan and signed a Master Promissory Note for it. I have been 'awarded' a subs and an unsubs loan for this incoming quarter and I've accepted them both. I have completed the entrance counseling because (here's the kicker) the lady over at the financial aid office for my new school told me I did NOT need it I called a few hours later asking a totally unrelated question and spoke to a different person who looked at my file and said that I DID need it. So to be on the safe side I did do it. The exact same crap happened when I asked about the MPN. One person said I needed it or my loans would not be disbursed on 3/16 (the day they're to be disbursed) and the other - oh boy- first she said I did, then she was unsure, then she said I didn't then she went to go ask someone in charge and said I didn't, still unsure she asked me to call back on friday(today) if my awards were not disbursed and we would ' figure it out' (that was a great chuckle i had). This school has a bad case of 'he said, she said.' I mean I understand that they are busy but come on I just need a straight answer. I've submitted all of my documents months in advance and here they are pulling my chain a week before loans are disbursed, that's literally a day before fees were due and 2 weeks before school starts. I tried to complete a MPN for my school just to be on the safe side but it says it cannot be completed because the school has no award for me(studentloans.gov). My student school account says, in regards to the status of my loan, aside from approved, "Your loan application was certified by the FA Office and approved by your lender." So for the past month I've assumed everything was fine. I received no e-mails, no reminders in all the constant visits to the financial aid department, no warnings or anything that would hint I missed something. Long question short do I need a new MPN for a new school even if I've already done an old MPN at a prior school. If so and the site does not allow me to submit a new MPN because i keep getting an error message(quoting from studentloans.gov error message) "The school you have selected requires an award prior to submitting a Master Promissory Note. Please contact your school's financial aid office." Is it somehow the schools fault? and yes when i contacted the schools office in regards to the error message they said to call back on friday. -_- I appreciate your tough love 'Mr. Flair' but perhaps you should read the question before you submit such a stupid and ironic answer, I didn't "want" to make out a loan I DID make out a loan. I can't sign the papers because THERE ARE NO PAPERS, or online document. I am unfamiliar with the financial aid department so my knowledge of its process is, yes, a bit retarded, thus my question.... I suffer from mild migraines so, that I am aware of, that is the only thing wrong with me. Quit calling them up for "stupid questions you say." Funny since THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE THERE FOR (at least that's what their website and pamphlets say; "Feel free to call us if you have any questions").That's like telling me to stop bothering customer service with questions regarding my product. A handout? So a loan, that I have to pay back, with accrued interest is a handout? That's a first. You are probably wondering why I am up so early, yet again, well

  • Answer:

When I transferred, I had to complete a new MPN. It took a while for it to show up in my online student account though. Once the school has processed their paperwork and put it into the system, it should show up on your account and you should receive a message informing you that you need to complete your MPN.

I work for a Financial Aid office for 2 different schools. I have seen several different schools tell students they can transfer your MPN. You can not transfer your MPN, if you change schools you must complete a new MPN. It can take up to 30 days for it to be processed. Once processed it will not say you need to complete it unless something is wrong. It will show up as completed. Also most Financial Aid representatives do not actually work at the campus, and use a data base to obtain there information. It is very easy to get misleading information if a student can not clearly state his issue. There are many circumstances that may give an agent the wrong information to supply. All agents are here to assist students in receiving there aid for them to complete there school. Please keep in mind that it is not up to the agents on the amount you receive or when you receive them. This is based on the schools policies and the lenders. Your financial aid actually comes from the federal and state government and local lenders.
