What does this mean? "The renter agrees to pay the cost of replacement or repair plus 50% of that cost."?

I'm trying to negotiate a contract dispute. If you are a renter who broke something that needed to be replaced, what does this line in the contract mean for you? Does it mean you agree to pay the replacement of the object? Or does it mean you agree to pay the replacement of the object plus 50% of that cost. Thanks for the help!

The renter is a sucker. You pay for the replacement or repair plus another 50% of the cost of the item. Do not sign such an agreement. For example, the refrigerator breaks down. The landlord said you broke it. You couldn't prove otherwise. The refrigerator is 20 years old and has fully depreciated. Under your contract you are liable for a new refrigerator ($500.00) , plus half of the cost ($250.00) for a total of $750.00. VOILA!! You just made the landlord $750.00 richer since the old refrigerator had no value. Does it make sense to you?

Don't sign that...it means that the renter would pay 100% of the cost of repair/replacement, PLUS an additional 50%! For example, if the renter accidently broke a window and it needed to be replaced for $300, the renter would have to pay that $300 plus another $150 for a total of $450! Bad deal! A contract like this encourages tennants not to tell their landlord about things that need to be replaced or repaired.

For example, California law says that renters are responsible for damage done beyond normal wear and tear and only up to the remaining depreciated value of that item. No up charges.
