How do I find out my national insurance number in the UK?

Is it possible to find a job in UK without National Insurance Number?

  • I want to find a summer job for August but i don't have a National Insurance Number, so is it possible to find a job without it?

  • Answer:

you must need a National Insurance (NI) number, and may be liable to pay NI (Social Security) contributions. These contributions pay for your pension and other benefits: anyone working in the United Kingdom will need a National Insurance number to give to your employer. UK citizens who have always lived in the UK should automatically be given an NI number on their 16th birthday. Most international students are eligible to work part time while studying in the UK. You can start work while you wait for your NI application to be processed and the employer can process your wages using a code of their choice. You may also apply if you can prove that you have been actively seeking work. Applications may take a few weeks to be processed. When you visit the NI number Office to discuss your application, you will need to take the following documents with you: Your passport Confirmation of your student status eg your university student identification card or letter from your faculty office Two official documents as proof of your UK accommodation address eg bank account/credit card/mobile phone statement, gas/electricity bill, a letter from your landlord/your tenancy agreement – they must be originals An offer of employment letter from your employer. Failing this, any documents/evidence that will confirm you have been looking for work

If you are not yet 16 years old you don't pay National Insurance taxes so you don't need a number. In the UK, until children reach the Mandatory School Leaving Age (MSLA), they can only work a certain number of hours per week and only do certain jobs. Children are of compulsory school age up to the last Friday in June in the academic year of their 16th birthday. After this they have reached the MSLA and they can apply for their National Insurance Number and work full time. The youngest age a child can work part-time is 13 years old, with the exception of children involved in: television, theatre, modeling.
