Can I get Health Insurance in Maine if I am a Vermont resident?

  • I am a college student going to school in Maine. My legal residence is in vermont, however, I am living in an apartment in Maine. I would like to get insurance in maine because my vermont insurance (Medicaid) isn't accepted in most places over here. I can't change my legal residence because if I do, I will lose all funding for school (the scholarships and grants are only for VT residents) I REALLY need to get insurance over here because I have no way of going to the doctor, getting prescriptions filled, or getting counseling services. I am planning on, officially, moving to maine after I graduate, but right now I can't because of finances. I, also, do not have parents or anyone who could claim me under their insurance. Any suggestions of where I could go to get health insurance that will work in maine?

If you get insurance in Vermont, or any of the other states where you do not live, then it will not work for you in any state, because you did not get it in the state where you live.

Check your college. Most schools have student plans available. Otherwise, contact a local Maine agent. The agent can help you find a plan; you don't have to be a legal resident, you can use your dorm address. Be aware that depending upon your health conditions you may have a hard time qualifying for insurance, especially if you need mental health counseling. This is where the agent will be invaluable.

Only if you buy it through your college plan. Medicaid - welfare - isn't insurance, it's WELFARE. And you're right, there's no coverage out of state. That's not just for Vermont, it's EVERY state. But since you're used to welfare health insurance, I think you're going to be in for a very rude awakening, when you find out what REAL insurance costs - and when you discover it includes deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. So if you're not buying it through your school, you need to see a local agent - local to your legal residence - and get some quotes for coverage.
