How to present a poem artistically?

How to creatively present the poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling?

  • Answer:

I'm not one for poetry myself, but this has always been one of the few poems I've really liked. How about this for a theatric production: You're a very young man around the turn of the century (1900) going off to college or a trade school, you're the first one in your poor humble family to attend a higher education for a better life. You and your father walk up to a departing train at the station (the first prop) You look nervous, and you tell your father you're very unsure about what lies ahead. You don't think you're good enough. He says, "I'm just a *****(insert simple occupation like farmer, shoe maker, whatever) like my father before me. But you have such a better life ahead of you now! We've scrapped and saved for this moment. Such an opportunity! Buck up. You're a man now. You must act like a man. You must make us proud." You look at him for a few moments, bewildered Your father laughs, "I saw how nervous you were even last night. I am not so good with words my son, but I know of a poem, a good one that even I understood so well when I read it. "Here", he replies, and hands you a folded piece of paper. "What's this?", you ask "I wanted to read it to you now, but the train is leaving so soon", he says, "There not time. Read it on the train, son. It says so well what I can't put into words myself. You and your father say your goodbyes and the curtain draws. Act 2, you're in the train car (prop 2) You read the poem, and when you finish the curtain draws as you look up contemplating what you just read. EDIT: Oh. You're doing this tomorow lol Never mind then, just read the poem. Not much time for preparation or props, is there.
