What is a good amount of money for a first car?

Ok so I am going to turn 16 soon and I am looking for cars. My dad wants to give me $6,000 (that is what he paid for my brother's truck). But looking around, there are not any quality, newer (2005+) cars that I can get for this amount. I know my dad makes a lot of money (6 figures), but he doesn't want to spoil me. I appreciate that, but I really want a little more money, like $10,000. Is this a good amount? I would be willing to pay for half of the gas and insurance, and I make good grades. I was thinking of asking for a little more because he has spent over $8,000 fixing my brothers truck.

My parents gave me a car that had been totaled twice before I got it and was maybe worth $500, it didn't run when they give it to me. My truck I got for free and my last car was $400. Take what you can get and run with it, use Craigslist and Ebay to find good deals. Most people I know got their first car for under $2k.
