When is a car exempt from title transfer in massachusetts?

How much will be title transfer fees if I'm buying a used car?

  • I live in Kentucky and I'm buying a car on a used lot for 2,500 sale price. How much are the title transfer and all that fees going to cost? I don't know much about title fees and all that... KY state fees: Kentucky Title Fee: $9.00 Notary Fee: $2.00 (The title is mailed to the owner by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Title Branch, Frankfort, KY 40601. Expect the title in about 4-6 weeks.) Kentucky Speed Title: $25.00 (A speed title is mailed to the owner the following business day by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Title Branch, Frankfort, KY 40601.) Transfer Fee $8.00. Yearly Renewal Registration Fee: $21.00 Usage Tax: 6% of "retail price" (See Usage Tax definition above) Title Lien Statement recording fee: $22.00

  • Answer:

Sounds like you have everything you need. Add them up. A speed title costs more than a regular title. A lien costs more than no lien. $9+2+8+21 +6% +22. (the 22 only if there is a lien)

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/awcxn Ask to see the title. Make sure the person selling the vehicle is the person named on the title. Don't do it if "I'm selling it for a friend, who has already signed as seller". Now look where it says lien holder or perhaps legal owner. If the spot is blank, you're good. If not and there is no lien release, keep your wallet closed and pass on the deal. If everything is good on the title, go with the seller to the nearest DMV and transfer it into your name. He will sign as seller, you will sign as buyer, there will be taxes, transfer fee, registration fees to pay. You will also need to show insurance, so talk to your agent also. Since you did it with the seller at the DMV. there will be no surprises or problems. Your new title will come in the mail, enjoy your new ride.

When you go to the DMV you give them the title and they give you back a title application. Your title will come in the mail in 2-6 weeks this time registered in YOUR name. If you buy from a dealer, they often do the title rather than the DMV.
