Fundraiser/carnival ideas?

Why does this always happen when I come up with story ideas (read whole description please!)!?

  • This frustrates me to no end! So I can come up with story ideas but only if that genre is popuar! Here's some examples: When twilight came out and popular the only ideas I could come up with were paranormal romances. Now hunger games is out and all I can think about is dystopian stories Also I read a story idea on her (it was mythology and awesome) and now I can only think of those book ideas (Percy Jackson books) WHY!? Also I really want to come up with a, not new, but less used genre. Can you think of any cool genres? (more specific instead of saying sci fi say dystopian, just be specific) I have tried writing my ideas but I'm not inspired by these genres... Their too overused! *I am not asking for story ideas just genres *please don't say "don't doubt your ideas" OR "make it original." OR " just write what you want" OR " what does it matter, youre not going to get it published anyway". I have set my heart on coming up with a new book genre trend... Something less used that would be cool for everyone to read ( it's a dream... Don't judge). *by book genre trend like when twilight came out all these paranormal romances were then popular, like dystopian trend now. *if you are going to be rude or sarcastic don't bother answering *please ignore all grammar and spelling mistakes... I types this reapply fast on my ipod. * I know I should come up with ideas out of genres I like but I'm branching out and I might come up with a really good idea out of I genre I never thought. *I am a teen hoping for a teen audience *if you have any questions pease put then and I will edit it to answer the question... Just check back later Have a great day :)

Your problem is that you haven't read many books, so any new book is a large percentage of what you've read. Therefore it has a lot of influence on your thinking. If you start writing what you think is a cool new subgenre, you're probably just going to rehash what you already know. The solution, which I know you're not going to like, is to read more books, in more varied genres, to lessen the influence that any one book has on the stories you come up with. Don't limit yourself to reading what's currently popular with people of your own age. Another thing that may help you is to keep an ideas file, in which you write down anything you think might be useful as part of a story. Read over this every so often and see whether any combination of ideas jumps out at you as a good basis for a story.

Everyone has the same problem. It's like when you come out of the cinema from seeing a good film, and all you can think about and imagine in your head is THAT film. Your creativity is sparked by what's around you - in this case, Twilight and the Hunger Games because they're so popular. You can't live one day of your life without seeing something about them popping up in your view. I feel that I have a somewhat original idea in a overly-used genre (fantasy), but that was because I've spent four years on it. When I started out with it, I got really influenced by the things I kept seeing or what I was really into (like, Naruto, my favourite TV show at the time). Collaborate the ideas for stories that you get, wait on them and see what you can make by putting them together, wait some more, map out the characters and get some information from them (character interviews are very good with this) and see if you can't build the story around them and then add conflict. It's like in small steps. Don't get mad: you're in the first stages of getting to your dream :) With your genre-ordeal, well I can't help you: every genre's been done so much that they're old. Like cliches. But that's not a bad thing. It's what you do with them that makes them interesting for your audience. I do hope I've helped!

Why not combine the two? You could write a paranormal-type romance (but I'd advise making the girl the paranormal creature, to twist things up a little bit) in a dysotopian setting. Maybe this romance occurs after the world have been destroyed and rebuilt, but with these creatures accepted into society. That is my ramble :) Hope you can find something!

I can tell you why this happens. The ideas are interesting, and intrigue you. And you want to do these stories because you are intrigued by the idea. Also these books sell, and are really popular. And what author doesn't dream of their books being popular?

Lizzi

You probably do this because you like those ideas and they inspire you to write about similar things. You sound creative answer my question? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120320143738AABQ2x3

When I was in high school I took this awesome class where we talked about sub-genres of fantasy and science fiction. There are some really underused ones. Like. . . Bangsian fantasy, I believe it's called. Afterlives of the rich and famous. How fun is that? (I am now slapping myself for the sarcasm you didn't ask for.) So, that's a possibility. Also, you could always try heroic fantasy. As far as I know, that one's kinda underused. Science fiction would also be good. What about a Space Opera (playing around in space--Star Wars minus the Force) or Apocalyptic? Those are also less popular. I understand your pain, indeed. And I hope I could help. Good luck!
