How to make a French Revolution Project?

What rank of class would luthiers have had during the time of the French Revolution?

  • I am doing some personal research for a project I'm working on (not school related at all) - and I was wondering what did luthiers (people who make violins (well string instruments in general, but mine specifically worked with violins)) fall in under the context of class during the French Revolution (near the beginning; 1775-1789ish). Would they be considered bourgeoisie or aristocrats? Please let me know! Thanks in advance. P.S. It would be wonderful if you had sources and cited them for me as well; thank you ^_^

  • Answer:

They certainly wouldn't be aristocrats. Although most makers worked independently out of their own shops/houses they were not rich. Many just struggled by and died in relative poverty. I would say they were in the bottom of what would be called the middle class today. They had homes, they had businesses and property, but they didn't have people working for them like servants.
