So you said no romance novels but I have to suggest Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I am almost done reading it and I am in love I put it down only to go to work. First off its a classic second it's not a mushy mushy love story. It's a very ironic love story infact. It's about a young girl Elizabeth whos family is not necisarrily the most well bred and her incounters with Mr. Darcy. The language is a bit old and can get a bit confusing. Dictionary.com can help though just leave it on when you read.(Good way to help build your vocabulary too!) If you decide to read it I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Other suggestions since you did say no romances... Anything by John Stienbeck everything he wrote ends sadly Or the Confederacy of Dunces ( favorite book of all time I died of laughter)

sweet lord. grammar, children. read the book Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. no fantasy elements, no romance (there's some characters with romantic back stories but nothing lame and mushy), and the whole book is just fantastic and weird..

Books by Tamora Pierce, I liked the "Protector of the Small" series and "Song of the Lioness" series. Basically they are adventure books, set in a fantasy world of knights and kings. I loved King Arthur stories as a child so these books were very fun for me. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a really fun book to read, although it sounds kind of boring. I must say I loved Harry Potter books until..no I still love them haha Life teaching and meaningful books would more likely be: Holes by Louis Sachar was really really good. Don't let the cover art put you off. Pretend it doesn't have a cover and try it, it's not a fantasy but it's really good fiction. The Giver by Lois Lowry Number the Stars by Lois Lowry The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
