What is the difference between early action and early decision?

What is the difference between conformity and free will?

  • If free will is the conscious decision to act on your own impulses and decisions, then is conformity not a suppression of said actions? To conform to a thought, idea or society obviously requires an extension of one's own free will. But, to fully submit yourself to conformity, is that not an obvious abandonment of your own free will to the thoughts and ideas of an established society? Where does one's own free will and conscious thought end and submission of thoughts and action begin. Is there a difference or are they two sides of the same coin? I'd like your opinion on this interesting conundrum. Thanks.

  • Answer:

They are not mutually exclusive, you know. You can use your free will to conform to the way you are supposed to act in a movie theater, or a restaurant, for example, so you don't get kicked out. If you are gay you can conform to the idea of not looking at other men's junk while you're in there. But you must also use free will to be other wise than conforming. However, conformity per se is not something bad, as my examples above demonstrate.

Here's my opinion.....Conforming to a certain group, for example, a group that all dresses the same way, likes the same music and thinks the same way doesn't nessessarily mean you abandon free will.........If it's your free will to be there. Free will doesn't nessessary mean being different and opposite from everyone else. In a Totalitarian state like Russia in the 60s you can still have free will even though you can't exercise it..........you always have free will.

It's arguable that to make the choice to conform, however totally, requires having the free will to make that choice in the first place. Free will is not usually considered a decision but rather the ability to make decisions according to your will (as opposed to the will of a god or a non-entity such as certain kinds of fate.) In which case conformity is not a decision of suppression so much as a decision to place being part of a group as of more value than openly expressing individuality.

Thumbs down is needed

Free will is freedom of thought. Thought creates reality. Our thoughts are either reactionary or visionary. If they are reactionary (reaching conclusions based on input) then they are bound by observed limitations and can be manipulated to the degree that input can be controlled. Conformity is beneficial when living a reactionary life. If, on the other hand, our thoughts are visionary (focused on a desired reality) they are limitless and no longer bound by the rules of those living in a reactionary based reality.
