MLB Division + Playoffs(what they should do)?
-
Will the MLB ever think about scrapping division and going to a balanced schedule? I mean the AL East is an absolute monster + you face your division like 16 times a year. Yankees- Always spending and in the mix Red Sox- Always spending and in the mix Rays- have a ton of talent, and have proven to be better than yankees/red sox Jays- could be the Rays of 2008, TON of talent, team to watch out for It's an absolute Joke when you think what teams in the other divisions have to contend with. --------- A lot of times a Wild Card team (from the AL East) has a better record than 1 of the other Division Winners. Now, that better team will have to fight for their playoff lives when it should be the division winner with with a worse record in that situation. The Wild Card game is technically a playoff game, so a division winner should have to take part, if their record indicates. what they should do: Division winners are not guaranteed a top 3 playoff spot, but are guaranteed a playoff spot. Order the the Division winners + Wild Card teams 1-5 for example Using my modified 2012 rules in 2010 1)Rays: 96-66 2)Yankees: 95-67 (WC 1) 3)Minnesota: 94-68 4) Texas: 90-72 5) Redsox: 89-73 (WC 2) I think this is more fair. Even though Texas won it's division, but they were only good enough to have the 4th best record overall. Also if it was the Yankees and Red Sox in the "WC" game, you're punishing the Yankees for having the 2nd best record. I am not a Yankee fan, but the MLB should give credit for where is due. Even if Texas loses the 1 game playoff, they were still in the playoffs. Anyone else agree, feel free to say why my idea is good/horrible. I am really interested to hear what you guys have to say

Answer:
Interesting idea, but consider this. The spending of Yankees and Red Sox and the talent of Rays does not guarantee reaching or winning the World Series which is the ulltimate goal. Looking at the last 10 most recent World Series - 2011 St. Louis Cardinals over Texas Rangers 2010 San Francisco Giants over Texas Rangers 2009 New York Yankees over Philadelphia Phillies 2008 Philadelphia Phillies over Tampa Bay Rays 2007 Boston Red Sox over Colorado Rockies 2006 St. Louis Cardinals over Detroit Tigers 2005 Chicago White Sox over Houston Astros 2004 Boston Red Sox over St. Louis Cardinals 2003 Florida Marlins over New York Yankees 2002 Anaheim Angels over San Francisco Giants Summary: AL East teams in World Series = 5 times AL East teams winning World Series = 3 times Other AL teams winning World Series = 2 times NL teams winning World Series = 5 times AL teams in last 10 World Series = 7 different teams NL teams in last 10 World Series = 7 different teams With expanded interleague play in 2013, due to Houston moving to the AL, a MLB balanced schedule will become even more unattainable. Nothing is forever. MLB will have to work out any kinks with the 2 WC team playoff before going forward with something close to what you are suggesting.

It has been many years since any type of sports team has played a balanced schedule so where is the problem. All Divisions in baseball face challenges and just spending money does not guarantee anything as far as post season games and their opponents of winning. You have to realize that the degree of difference between talent levels among individual players and teams is small and lady luck, (The laws of probability), insures that every post season is a crap shoot and if you are it at all, you are a strong contending team. All such teams have a chance of capturing the big prize. A World Championship. Otherwise your suggestions have great merit and I suspect that MLB will eventually get around to instituting a fair number of them. Great question and a damn good schedule analysis.
