  • Hi, im 17 and have been teaching myself Japanese, during fall im going to take an Japanese college class to learn the language. Every since i was small i have always had an intrest in the culture/language and promised id learn it. However, i wasnt at my high school so instead i took 3 years of spanish. I only took spanish for business, and if i learn chinese it would be for business reasons too since there commonly spoken. It would be benefical to learn mandarin but my passion is japanese. So my question is how long will it probly take to learn chinese when you now japanese? Maybe iill try to learn chinese after i learn japanese because it will be faster for me to learn japanese because i now the basics and i actually take intrest in the language so ill be more motivated. Please help me! Doumo arigatou gozaimasu!! :)

Hi Taylor, Yes. Since both Chinese and Japanese are eastern Asian languages, they have many things in common. For example kanji are almost the same as Chinese hanzi. Chinese has much simpler grammar than Japanese. The biggest challenge will be the pronunciation. Generally Japanese has problem to pronounce 'R'. It'll take you some time to practice the 4 tones in Chinese too. But you'll feel Chinese much easier after you learn Japanese. Susan

reading and character recognition will be sightly easier in Chinese because you know some Kanji. Nothing else will make a difference in terms of learning.

I've heard its easier from my Chinese teacher, as long as you can keep the characters straight. I think Chinese sentence structure is harder, as well as mastering the tones.

I know a text to speech software can help you in learning languages, TTSUU allows you to slow down reading speed to learn the pronunciation. it provide multiple language voices: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Finish, Japanese, Chinese(Mandarin, HongKong, Taiwan), Korean, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, etc. TTSUU (Text to Speech Universal Utility) is a Text to Speech software that converts any text into natural-sounding speech. It reads any text for you. You can also convert the text material into WAV or MP3 audio files with this tool, so that the resulting MP3 can be played on many other devices such as iPods, PocketPCs and CD players etc. And TTSUU can even generate lyrics for you when converting text material into audios. When playing the audio, those devices with the lyrics capability, will display the original text, and therefore it will be possible for you to not only hear the text material but also get a look at the content through the display. The interface of TTSUU is very simple and intuitive, the two pillars in the interface serve as the area where you can add sticky notes that highlight points in the text content. You can pick off any interesting and salient parts of the text from any electronic documents such as MS Word Documents, Emails, Web Pages, PDF Files, etc and copy into these notes, and these can be colored to draw your attention easily.

It may help you in learning a few of the Chinese characters more easily since they are similar(but not exactly same) to Kanji but they are not always the same and the pronunciation are different. The meaning of each character usually stays the same which will help but it does not hold true all the time. One thing about Chinese that is easier than Japanese is that each character has only 1 pronunciation compared to Kanji. Besides learning how to write and the meaning of Chinese characters, Japanese does not help in Chinese at all as the grammar is totally different. In terms of grammar, it'll just be as difficult as any other language even if you know Chinese
