Volunteering at a hospital?

Volunteering in hospital, what vitamins/supplements can I take to boost my immune system and keep me healthy?

  • First off, I easily get sick/seem to be sick much more than others. I have just started volunteering at a hospital in the Inpatient Unit, filled with beds and sick patients. I have been going for a few weeks now, and always end up returning with a bit of a swollen throat or just not feeling to well. I'm a college student, and can't afford being sick or even just feeling sluggish. Any thoughts or advice on some vitamins or supplements I can take to keep me in tip top shape while still being able to help those less fortunate? I LOVE VOLUNTEERING!

  • Answer:

The only way you can actually "boost" the correct work is "prime" your immune system is with vaccines. You can't "boost" your immune system with vitamins and supplements. It does not work like that and it's the idea of wanting to "boost" a normal immune system is hideous anyway. Try telling this to someone with allergies.

make sure all your vaccinations are up to date and complete.

You can't "boost" your immune system. You can keep your immune function in peak condition by maintaining a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle; to avoid catching bugs wash your hands frequently and get vaccinations/boosters as necessary. Seek advice from the hospital. Vitamins, herbs and supplements won't keep the bugs at bay.

Eat your fruits and vegetables, get enough sleep, wash your hands like a maniac, get in the habit of NEVER - EVER touching your face (most germs get into to you through one of the "holes" in your face [eyes, nose, mouth]) - - you could try a cod liver oil supplement that contains vitamin A and D [both important to immunity, and most people are deficient], but really, there is no "boosting" the immune system - - you're best weapon is prevention. Also - a lot of hospitals offer masks for staff as well as visitors - don't feel strange at all about wearing them.

I'm almost never sick, my secret is I don't eat sugar. I treat myself once in a while of course, but I think sugar should be a treat, not a daily staple. Cut out junk food, especially sugar, and I'm sure your immune system will kick in again. Eat a reasonably healthy diet and you shouldn't need supplements
