What is an earthquake? What happens during an earthquake?

Answer:
An earthquake is a sudden release of built-up stresses resulting in a strain of the rocks. The rocks are fractured and slip past each other. Depending on what type of fault it is there is either mostly dip-slip (up or down) motion or strike-slip (left or right) motion. Dip-slip earthquakes result in fault scarfs while strike-slip earthquakes result in gashes on the surface and displacements of rivers and other natural features.

forms would be faults and joints, cause is usually from a build up of pressure of movement of plates and then a final crack and release of pressure. or underground mining can cause earth quakes by removing material and reducing the stability of the ground.

Its called the "ring of fire"thats where most earthquakes occur when the techtonic plates either move away, over or rub against eachother underground.
They happen at night, you just don't hear as much about those--usually there's less damage, less panic, etc. I actually slept through a light quake once when I was kid. Also, remember, at any given moment it's night somewhere, so the quake that happens at 11 am where you are is happening at 2 am somewhere else.
