• Okay, so this is my research paper so far. Can someone please tell me what can do on it to improve it and any other comments on it? Please and Thank you :D The topic of my research paper is on why/why not the book "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin should be banned. The Awakening by Kate Chopin should not be banned due to the fact that it greatly represents and sends out a positive message about women’s desire and need for freedom in society as well as their right to independence. Many of these positive messages were sent out in the book through the main character, Edna Pontieller. “Edna Pontieller epitomized the consummate new woman of the late nineteenth century” (Sprinkle). She was a free spirit and broke away from the encumbering expectations of women that society held. The late nineteenth century was a time when women were expected to live a lifestyle fully dedicated to their family and Edna most definitely did not agree with this standard of living. So instead, she broke away from these barriers that were keeping here within the type of life she was expected to live and she became everything that a woman wanted to be. Edna became a woman full of courage, passion, and most importantly, she became an independent woman. Seeing that this book was written in a time period where women’s rights and independence hasn’t yet been fully introduced and accepted by society it is comprehensible the reason why some may have not agreed with the book and its theme. Not only was the theme of The Awakening not fully accepted by society, but the various sexual scenes presented throughout the book were also seen as inappropriate. A critical review stated that “… critics were shocked and dismayed at Edna Pontellier’s behavior and considered Chopin’s novel morbid and lacking literary value” (Sprinkle). Also stated in the review, “critics were at a loss to explain the reasons why an artist with Chopin’s undisputed literary talent would contribute to what one reviewer called “the overworked field of sex fiction.” Though, despite the opinions of Chopin’s book, today we find The Awakening a fascinating and exciting book that is an excellent representation of women’s freedom, rights, and independence and the struggle that they went through for it. There are cases in which The Awakening was recently challenged and restrained due to an inappropriate painting on the cover of the book and disapproval of its sexual scenes. In one situation in 2007, according to the American Library Association, the book was “retained on the Northwestern Suburban High School District 214 reading list in Arlington Heights, IL along with eight other challenged titles in 2006. A board member, elected amid promises to bring her Christian beliefs into all board decision-making, raised the controversy based on excerpts from the books she'd found on the Internet.” Also, just last year, the book was banned in the Oconee County Library in Georgia for its inappropriate cover. The cover was a painting of a woman’s bare chest. Much of the banning and challenging of The Awakening is based off its sexual content that many adults saw unfit for students to read. Sexual imagery throughout The Awakening left readers of the nineteenth century with comments that weren’t so positive about the book. The book was, as said by various critics, “vulgar, unwholesome, unholy and a misappropriation of Chopin’s exceptional literary talent.” Also it was said that “Many reviewers regarded the novel’s aggrandizement of sexual impurity as immoral …” Though we cannot judge the opinions and criticism of those who felt and expressed the thoughts and feelings they had of the book. The society simply wasn’t prepared for such a novel. “Society during Chopin’s time period believed women to be a weak, dependent gender whose position lay nothing above mothering and housework” (Phenix). The book completely contradicted their view of the life and behavior of women in their day. Today there isn’t much of a reason for the book to be banned. The sexual scenes may still be a problem, but it’s not one that is as big as it used to be. Sex is a part of nature. Edna Pontellier went along with nature. The issue with the sexual scenes shouldn’t overtake the overall greatness of the book. The sexual scenes actually add excitement into the book. They grab and keep the reader’s attention. It is agreed though that “Kate Chopin bravely exposed an attitude of feminism to an unprepared society in her novel The Awakening” (Phenix). She was quite daring to write a novel so out of the ordinary with such a controversial theme.
