How do you change a ford ranger key cylinder without a key?

How do you change the spark plugs for a 1996 Ford Ranger 6-cylinder 4.0 liter?

  • Answer:

You need to first remove the spark plug wire boots. Use a spark plug boot puller tool or your hand and twist the boot and pull. Then use a 5/8" spark plug socket and ratchet to remove the plug (clean the area around the spark plug to prevent debris from entering the engine). Install the new plug (if it needs to be gapped, gap the spark plug before removing any old ones). Use a rubber hose or the socket to get a good grip on the spark plug and hand tighten, then use the socket with a torque wrench to tighten to correct ft/lbs (usually between 10-15 ft/lb). Finally, coat the inside of the wire boot with dielectric silcone grease (a white grease) and work the boot onto the spark plug; you should feel it seat itself. The three spark plugs on the driver's side are relatively easy to access, but the three on the other side are very difficult. You will either need some long sockets/swivel sockets and perhaps some other tools, or you may need to take apart anything that is obstructing your work. Hope this helps...I'm currently changing mine in my '96 4.0L ranger.
