What holds the positively electrons together and why?

Why does period 3 have 8 elements but energy level n=3 holds 18 electrons?

  • Answer:

In many periodic tables the number of electrons in the shells in the ground state of that element. The first shell, n = 1, can hold 2 electrons in 1 orbital, labeled 1s. The second shell, n = 2, can hold 8 electrons in 4 orbitals, one labeled 2s and 3 labeled 2p. The third shell can hold 18 electrons in 9 orbitals, one 3s, three 3p and five 3d and so on.
