How to Animate Images in After Effects

  • Answer:

Image animation in Adobe After Effects relies on keyframes: a series of specific frames within the animation timeline that designate the location or applied graphical effects of the image. To complete the animation and ensure smooth movements and transitions between keyframes, After Effects fills in the frames between the keyframes with a variety of user-chosen interpolation methods. Difficulty: Moderate Instructions Creating a Composition and Importing the Image Click “Composition” and then click “New Composition.” Select a resolution for the animation – a preset menu includes settings for HD video and web animation. Enter an animation end time in the “Duration” box. This sets how long the animation will run. Click “OK” to create a new animation composition window. Click “File,” click “Import” and then click “File.” Select the image file or files that you wish to animate and then click “Open.” Creating Keyframes Drag the time slider all way to the left to set the animation at 0:00:00:00. Set the image to the desired starting position. You can also set the starting opacity, scale or rotation by selecting the corresponding option in the keyframe tool panel and changing the number to the preferred value. Drag the time slider to another position on the timeline. Set the image to a new starting position, opacity, scale or rotation value. Repeat steps three and four for every keyframe you wish to create in the animation. If you have multiple images in the animation, repeat all steps for each image. Tips & Warnings Warning: Longer animations will result in larger file sizes.
