Bringing a dog to Shanghai to live

  • I am relocating from Los Angeles to Shanghai in October 2004. I have a 20 pound 2yr old poodle mix that I want to take with me to live in Shanghai.I need specific information about the procedures and documents needed to bring my dog to Shanghai. The answers must cover these topics as well: 1. What sort of quarantine does my dog have to undergo? Is it quarantine in the US before entering China or just when I arrive in Shanghai or both? 2. I need health certificates and other documents from a licensed vet-is there a state-certified vet I specifically need to go to or any licensed vet/animal hospital?

Hi pixieduste, I found an excellent post by someone who has taken dogs to and from Shanghai twice. It answers all of your questions and more. I'll copy/paste specific parts below, but please click on the link and read the entire post (3 pages long) - it's extemely informative as well as entertaining. Relocation BRING A DOG (CAT) TO SHANGHAI Posted by PhatAV8r on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 10:55 AM CCT http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/displayarticle161.html What sort of quarantine does my dog have to undergo? Is it quarantine in the US before entering China or just when I arrive in Shanghai or both? - Only in China for 30 days in your home. "Now, the rules do change in China, first thing you learn is that ?nothing is permissible is China, but that everything is possible?. When SARS was in full swing last year, the local government had to start looking at added precautions to prevent the disease spreading to Shanghai, so the ?idea? of quarantining was accepted, and they did in fact build a set of kennels for the purpose. And, true to form, they sent out notices that this would become the practice in July 2003. However, because SARS never amounted to much in Shanghai, and was contained in the other locations, and because they found no relationship between PETS and the spread of the disease, they decided to hold off and never implemented the plan." http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=161&&pagenum=1&commentextra "You will take your dogs home and keep it quarantined for 30 days. They will give you a chart to fill out your dogs conditions once every week (temp., skin, diet, etc.). Just put "Normal" if everything is okay. When the 30 days is up, they will contact you or you can contact them to come to your house to check your dogs. The inspector came to my house today and picked up the forms and chit chat for a little bit and left. No big deal at all." "I just found out that a dog permit/license is mandatory in China. It runs from 1000Rmb to 2000 rmb depending on where you live. You will be able to apply for one at the police station after the quarantine period is over. I was told that a dog caught without a license will be taken away from you until you get one. And the living condition at that outdoor "shelter" is horrible. They will not be responsible if anything happen to your dog at the outdoor shelter." http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/displayarticle161.html I need health certificates and other documents from a licensed vet-is there a state-certified vet I specifically need to go to or any licensed vet/animal hospital? -You will have have your dog examined by your local accredited vet and have the papers endorsed by the CA State Veterinarian. "...the paperwork must be notarized (to be strictly legal) by the State Vet from the state you are exporting your dog from. He basically certifies to the Chinese government that your animal is healthy, and that the area the dog has been living in is free from known communicable diseases that the animal might carry (think BEV)." http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=161&pagenum=2& "Here's what you'll need: Your pet's current vaccination certificate and ONE health certificate. Make sure you have an ACCREDITED Veterinarian to fill out your health certificate. Put BOTH of your dogs on the same health certificate to save endorsement money later. You will need to find out where your state USDA veterinarian is located to have him/her endorse your health certificate and vaccination cert." http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=161&pagenum=3& CALIFORNIA STATE VETERINARIAN State Veterinarian, Richard Breitmeyer, DVM, MPVM 1220 "N" Street, Room A-114 Sacramento, California 95814 Phone: 916-654-0881 Fax: 916-653-4249 http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/ 1OCTOBER 1994 QUARANTINE AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS FOR DOGS EXPORTED FROM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA 3.
