How to find Wilderness Jobs?
-
I would like to find wilderness jobs that are available. (Interships, Temporary Assisgnments lasting longer then a month). I cant afford to spend 4-5 grand to places of these so only internships and positions please. In areas of Idaho, Wyoming, Canada or anything relating to the woods. If you reference the book "Indian Creek Chronicles: A winter Alone in the Wilderness" By Beter Fromm. You'll notice that he is in charge of guarding salmon eggs for 7 months in the wilderness. Something of this job nature I would like you to find out. The stuff I was able to pull up on my extensive research was resort jobs of that nature. I would not like to do that. Wilderness Surivial Camps would be nice to work for of that nature also. If you could please find out any contact information, or website information of who I could call for a position like this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, joshuam! The following compilation of resources should give you a good start toward finding a remote wilderness internship position. I have run across many more opportunities, but they center on outdoor adventure camps, fisheries or habitats located in the midwest or the east coast, or have too much social contact. I have added a few "Adventure Job" positions on the bottom of my answer but I know this is not really what you are looking for. Basically, you should write to any and all agencies that interest you - even if they currently advertise no positions. There are many places that will use your services, but they may not be able to pay anything other than provide a tent and food essentials. (One such listing is an example I have provided below, ("a position you can beg for") which is really advertised for University of Idaho students, but may allow you a place!!) US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE - ALASKA ====================================== "Working in Alaska." http://alaska.fws.gov/internettv/workwithustv/workingtv.htm Click on the link "for Temporary and Summer Employment" "Each year we hire temporary employees to collect biological data and support our biological programs. Applications are accepted in October or November and employees are selected from these applications throughout the following year. We also hire Park Rangers to assist visitors and provide interpretive programs. Ranger positions are advertised individually as needed. Temporary positions are advertised through USA Jobs." == You might be interested in following up with the contacts in this brochure for Fisheries Science Internships in Alaska through the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The brochure is for last year, but there is a good likelihood that such positions exist from year to year. http://alaska.fws.gov/fisheries/pdf/2004_intern_announcement.pdf INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH ALASKAN FISH AND GAME DIVISIONS ================================================================ For information and contacts, please read the following article: "Future Biologists Get Hands-On Experience," by Nancy Long. Wildlife News http://www.wildlifenews.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=wildlife_news.view_article&articles_id=78 ** "All divisions and sections have employed interns: Sport Fish, Subsistence, Administrative Services, Wildlife Conservation, Boards Support, Commercial Fisheries and the Commissioner?s Office. Each is responsible for their local intern and education programs. Students are encouraged to contact the fish and game division and regional office for the location or subject of interest they wish to pursue." Contact information for each ADF&G division, region, and regional supervisor may be found at: http://www.adfg.state.ak.us/contacts/dept_contacts.php. On a tamer note: If you are really interested in working with Salmon habitat, you could do something along the lines of these opportunities in California from the Marine Coastal and Watershed Resource Directory http://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/directory/resdirectory/int.html "Salmon Protection and Watershed Network."
