How to advertise your web site in yahoo?

Updating Web Site Listing in Google and Yahoo Search Engines

  • I suggested my web site on Yahoo via the suggest a site mechanism in late 2002. It works great. If you type "Altona Forest" on Yahoo or Google the web site comes up as the first hit. On May 12th I moved the web site to a new URL. I tried to update the form in Yahoo to indicate the site had a new address but with no luck. I used the Yahoo form at: http://add.yahoo.com/fast/change This is what Yahoo comes back with: The URL <url:http://members.rogers.com/altonaforest> was not found in Yahoo! Canada. We even tried several variations of the URL and still couldn't find it. If the search results for your site has an Google logo at the top or if the title states "Yahoo! Search Results by Google" then you must first submit your site to Yahoo!. Here I typed in the old site but it claimed it wasn't found even though if you type in "Altona Forest" it comes back with the very URL it says it cannot find. The old site is: members.rogers.com/altonaforest The new site is: www.altonaforest.org Can you help?

  • Answer:

Hello jeffbowers, Your old website is not listed in the Yahoo directory, or the Yahoo Canadian directory. I can see where this is very confusing, so I'll do all I can to help. Here is where your old listing is coming up in search results : Altona Forest http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search?p=Altona+Forest&ei=UTF-8 The results above are indeed Yahoo 'search' results, but are provided to Yahoo by Google. You can see the Google logo at the top right of the results. It's a small Google logo, with the text 'Powered by' on it. To see if your listing is in the *separate* Yahoo directory, we can check here: Yahoo Main Directory results for Altona Forest http://search.yahoo.com/search/dir?p=Altona+Forest&h=c Yahoo Canadian Directory results for Altona Forest http://ca.search.yahoo.com/search/ca?p=altona+forest&y=c Yahoo offers Google results as their primary search source. To use their directory as a default search source, you can point your browser here : Yahoo Directory http://dir.yahoo.com/ So where do we go from here? Simply submit your new URL to Google for free : Google Add URL ://www.google.com/addurl.html Google will then index your new site at their discretion. Once it is indexed, it will then appear in the default Yahoo listings as well. This can take anywhere from 1 day to months, depending on how well your new site is linked to througout the internet. Yahoo does still accept suggestions to their directory, but have moved more toward commercial inclusion and paid listings. To learn how to suggest a site to Yahoo Canada, take a look at these instructions : How to Suggest a site to Yahoo Canada http://help.yahoo.com/help/ca/url/url-01.html I hope this clarifies the difference between the two engines. Should you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. I would be glad to assist you further. To assist with this answer, I searched around the Yahoo Canada website for submission guidelines. I also searched both the main Yahoo website directory, and the Canadian directory for your old website. Thanks for the great question - SgtCory
