Where is the pain exactly when you have kidney stones?

Kidney stones and pain

  • Hello, I have a few questions but first I want to tell you my situation I was diagnosed with kidney stones back in the later part of November. I seen a specialist and he told me I had a 3 mm stone in one kidney and a 5 mm stone in the other. He prescribed me medicine to help pass them through. I know one passed as I was given a medical urine hat to strain my urine and I seen it. The other I'm not sure about. I finished my meds, but I missed the 2nd follow up appointment and I just got back to rescheduling. So since the missed appointment I've been doing what I can to ease the pain and keep the stones at bay. But in the last week the pain has started to rise back up and I keep feeling cramping in the area of both kidneys. I also think I have another uti and possibl a problem with my bladder because I keep experiencing cramping. I am not sure if I should wait the 2 weeks until my appointment to tell the doctor this, or try to up the intake of water even more or simply go to the emergency room. I know you can't diagnose or determine over the internet whether or not it's a good idea for me to do this or do that, but do you have any solutions for my pain? It's tolerable, but the cramping still exists if I take something over the counter. I'm so confused and in pain and have tried "old wives tales" relief such as a rice heating pad on my back and other similar things. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

Cramping pain occurs when a stone is being passed through the ureter in to the urinary bladder and often the pain is unbearable. This is likely to be the 5 mm stone as the diameter of ureter rarely allows stones larger than 5 mm to pass. You need some anti spasm medications such as baclofen and flomax to aid in the passage of this stone.
