  • I am trying to find out what the credentials are to be accepted as a Medical Biller/Coder for employment in the Healthcare Industry without a college degree. There are two Job Training Schools offering different credentials. One is offering a Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS) and a Certified Medical Administrative Asst (CMAA). The other school is offering the credential of Certified Professional Coder (CPC). Which is the better of the two. I have a work experience background of 10 years as an insurance verification clerk and would like to advance. I am currently unemployed and can not afford college. Thank you.

    Hello For medical billers and coders, you are correct. A college education is not required but current certification is; which can vary by state. The difference between the two depends on what you would prefer to do. CBCS covers two areas, billing and coding. In the working environment those are treated as two different things. Some medical offices will have billers, some will have coders, some will require their employees to have both credentials.
