Why can't my air conditioner work correctly?

air conditioner not working

  • I will try to make this as short as i can. Our air conditioner ( lennox less than 3 years old) has stopped working. At first it seemed that it was just blowing out air that wasn't cold and by turning it off for awhile and then back on it seemed to stay working for a couple of days at a time. Our dealer told us to check airflow etc and change filters which we have done many times. Now it seems that the outside unit won't even kick on most of the time. The last tech out said it was just the breaker and he reset it but it only worked for about 10 minutes after he did so.  We have tried the breaker reset in conjuntion with flipping the power breaker ( in the house) on and off and the results are a clicking noise from the outside unit ( just once) and then sometimes it will kick on just to shut off in a matter of minutes. I see no indication of ice buildup anywhere on or around the unit. I can't imagine what could be wrong and the techs they send out seem to think there is nothing wrong but it still doesn't work.

  • Answer:

It sounds like a compressor problem. The next thing to do is to put a set of gauges on the outside unit and an "amp" meter. Then start the unit & watch it operate. The tech can tell from the readings on the gauges and the "amp" flow to the unit. Then you can tell what is hapening. I would get a new dealer that checks out the problem, instead of fliping the breaker & walking away.
