Send emails with Win 2000 SMTP Server

  • QUESTION: My objective is to send emails from my pc without going through my company's Exchange Server (to increase speed). I have been told that Windows 2000 Professional can serve as a SMTP server. The answer I'm looking for is step-by-step instructructions allowing me to configure this windows feature to send my emails without Exchange Server. When my email works - then I'm happy. I realize this will probably take several rounds of clarification and set the price to reflect the effort. You're help will be greatly appreciated. Best, -John SYSTEM & SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION: IBM Thinkpad T23 (only pc involved) Windows 2000 Professional Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 2 Build 2195 392Meg Ram Outlook 2000 (used to send and receive email - I want this to be my only point of contact for email) Incoming email is received through company's Pop3 access (company's smtp will only deliver to the local domain) BACKGROUND * I am generally on the road and access the internet in several ways: 1) through client's LAN, 2) company's dial-up access from hotel, 3) from my company's LAN when I'm at the office * My company is set up with exchange server. From any internet connection I can log onto our company's network and send and receive email through Exchange Server. This involves an onerous synchronization process which I'm working to avoid. This is the THE driver of my request. * To date I have avoided this sync through 1) receiving emails through the company's pop3 server (company's smtp only works for company addresses) 2) sending emails through a yahoo account. * This method has had the following problems: 1)yahoo has relatively small file size limits, 2) The yahoo account shows on my business emails (even though I have it set to reply to the business account, people still see and use the yahoo account), and 3)any problems with yahoo delays my emails. * To circumvent Exchange Server without using Yahoo, I have tried without success to setup a SMTP Virtual Server on my pc and use it as the outgoing SMTP server to send emails. * Most of the information I've referred to re: SMTP setup has been from the following: 1) Microsoft Help (If you have electronic mail (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol or SMTP) installed, you can view the product documentation by typing file:\\%systemroot%\help\mail.chm in your browser address bar and pressing ENTER.) and 2) ASP Today article: Setting Up the SMTP Mail Service in Windows 2000 www.asptoday.com - although may require a subscription to access. These instructions incorporated Exchange Server into the setup, which defeats my purpose.

Hi nick37-ga, This question is not one that I feel can be answered completely without some back and forth on clarifications (as you've indicated). So, please DO NOT RATE this answer until you are satisfied with the results. I was able to locate a step-by-step guide to installing SMTP on your Windows 2000 machine. The page is, "howTo Confiure a Windows 2000 SMTP Server" and it is found here: http://www.skybuilders.com/users/jesse/docs/howToSMTP.html Once you have completed the install as listed on that site, (with making the appropriate changes where needed), you'll also need to configure your Outlook client to use the new SMTP server. You'll need to change the SMTP info to your own hostname and the new SMTP port at 2525 (as per the directions on the above site). The changes from the above site that you will need to make is: * enter your OWN hostname and domain name instead of the "skyspec" info. * enter your OWN IP address into the Relay from info (or whatever is appropriate if your IP changes frequently: probably the domain name would be the most appropriate to allow relaying from) * When it recommends to use a drive letter of "G:\", ignore it for a directory on C:\. However, use a different directory than the default. SO, use C:\SMTPMail where the instructions suggest g:\inetpub\...etc... There are other SMTP servers available for Windows that may be easier to use/install. For example, Pegasus Mail has a MTA that is free to use and download. You can find more about Pegasus Mail's MTA at the Pegasus Mail homepage located here: http://www.pmail.com/ If you decide that Pegasus is the way you prefer, I'll give you a step-by-step on that product. I had Pegasus SMTP up and running in about 2 minutes--with no prior knowledge of the software whatsoever! I will work with you on getting your SMTP server up and running on Windows--so, please DO NOT RATE this answer until you are satisfied with the results. Thanks!
