I want to become a Labor and delivery nurse.

Labor/Delivery Nurse

  • I want to become a labor and delivery nurse. I just don't know where to start. I am a junior in high school, enrolled in a Health Science and Technology class that will go on through my senior year, and when I finish, I will take an exam, and could become an LNA. Where do I go from there? I would like to go to a 2 year college, but can I do that if I want to specialize in labor and delivery? Or are 4 years required? I guess I just want to make sure that I am going to be prepared for graduating high school and going to college to achieve my dream. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Megan: I would concentrate on math, science, anatomy and physiology and chemistry in high school to help you prepare for nursing. Your dreams can be reached with a 2 year degree. I recommend a 2 year associates RN degree at a local community college which will get you into the workforce quickly. It is also cheaper and will be less of a tuition burden on you and your parents. You can go for your Bachelors and Masters once you get a hospital job and they will pay for the classes. Most nurses out of school start in Med Surg and then start taking courses that are related to Labor and Delivery to give them an edge in getting hired in that department. It is very popular and may take some time to get in. However, with the right courses you will have no problems with that. Showing the manager that you have taken courses in advance of getting into that department shows your commitment to Labor and Delivery. Everyone starts off as an RN and then specializes in their area of interest. You may find that your interests will change once you get into Nursing school. There are so many fields of nursing that you will have many opportunities over the years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nursing_specialties Regardless of what you decide, you will be entering one of the most diverse and respected of professions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1-uMKg86Ck&feature=related Good Luck!
