Mental Health Nursing abroad.

Mental Health Nursing

  • Hi, I'm currently studying an Access to Nursing course at my local college, with a hope to get into university to study Adult Nursing (Mental Health), my question is do you cover basic nursing firstly before branching off to mental health and what sort of career paths could you go into. I'm very interested in working with children with behavioral problems e.g. ADHD, ADD etc, is this the right career path for me? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

Lucy: I see you are from the UK and I can not really comment as I am practicing in the US. I can tell that in the US, we all must become RN's first. Then we can take additional seminars and courses to help us to get into the mental health area to become psychiatric nurses. However, there is no requirement to take additional classes. You can actually be hired into that field and then learn as you go...so to speak. The major requirement is to be a Registered Nurse. Good Luck! Ken RN, CCRN
