No images on HTML email/Web
-
Several weeks ago I stopped receiving most images on html email thru Outlook Express as well as many Web sites thru the latest Internet Explorer. I use Mocrosoft EX Professional and Norton Systemworks Professional 2003. I have adjusted all the settings on Exploer and return them to Default - nothing worked. I also adjusted Norton Systemworks to low security settings and that did not work either. Please help. Thank you!

Thanks stu-ga, Here is the answer : =================================================== Ok! I think that I might have (finally!) found a solution to your problems. I have found articles on the net referring to two situations under which Norton Firewall/Antivirus interferes with display of images. They are : 1) Conflicts with Internet Explorer 2) Ad blocking or Privacy controls in Firewall But first of all, there appears to be a slight confusion regarding the Norton Software you have installed on your computer. You said that you just had Norton SystemWorks 2003 Pro installed. Then, in your last clarification, you said that you disabled Norton Firewall. Now, SystemWorks pro 20003 does NOT contain Norton Firewall as per Symantec's website ( http://www.symantec.com/sabu/sysworks/pro/features.html ) However, Norton Firewall is available as a standalone product, or as part of the Norton Internet Security package. So I am assuming that you have one of these installed. Now to tackle the reasons for your software problem. 1) Conflicts with Internet Explorer ====================================== You say that you are using the latest Internet Explorer(IE). Outlook Express also uses Internet Explorer to display HTML emails. Therefore any image problems that affect IE will affect your HTML emails also. The Microsoft Knowledge Base lists the following conflicts Norton Firewall/Antivirus has with IE. - Q309287 : Cannot View Some Images on Web Pages After Upgrade to IE 6.0 ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q309287 ) ***EXTRACT FROM THE ABOVE ARTICLE*** SYMPTOMS : After you upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 and then browse to a Web page, some of the images on the page may be displayed as expected, but other images may be displayed as only a placeholder icon. CAUSE : This behavior can occur if the Norton Personal Firewall program is installed on your computer. RESOLUTION : To resolve this issue, uninstall and then reinstall the Norton Personal Firewall program. When you reinstall Norton Personal Firewall, the program is reconfigured for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and should now allow the normal display of images. ***END EXTRACT *** While the above conflict was for IE6, the following article details a conflict older versions of IE have with Norton Antivirus. - MSKB Article 316545 : Web Pages Display a Red "X" Instead of a Graphic ***EXTRACT FROM THE ABOVE ARTICLE*** SYMPTOMS : When you browse Web sites, you may find that some Web pages display a box that shows a red "X" instead of the graphic that you expect. CAUSE : This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true: Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security from Symantec Corporation is installed on the computer. -AND- The Nisdrv.vxd file is damaged. (This file is a component of the Symantec programs.) RESOLUTION : To work around this problem, use either of the methods that are described in this section. Method 1: Disable the Nisdrv.vxd Component (See detailed instructions in the article) Method 2: Remove and Reinstall the Symantec Program ***END EXTRACT *** The best solution if you have IE conflicts, appears to be a complete uninstallation of your Norton Products suite. After you are finished uninstalling your Norton products, - Reboot - Verify that you are able to view images on webpages - Make sure that the Internet Firewall that is built into Windows XP is disabled. For more information, check out this article : - Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall and Windows XP ( http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2001060513044636 ) - Reinstall your Norton product - Everything should be hunky dory now :) In case you have any problems uninstalling Norton, check out the following Symantec KnowledgeBase articles : - How to uninstall Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003 ( service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/735050b77b1fcece88256bc7005c3bc6/bfc5401e9a00857965256c47007a4287?OpenDocument&sone=nis_2003_tasks.html ) - How to uninstall Norton SystemWorks 2002 or 2003 manually from Win XP ( http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nsw.nsf/pfdocs/2001091013435207 ) - How to use the Norton SystemWorks cleanup utility (SymClean) ( http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nsw.nsf/pfdocs/2001101612274407 ) ============================================================================ 2) Firewall AdBlocking/Privacy protection. I found the following webpages which refer to problems in viewing images when using Norton Firewall. The links are to the Google cache version of the pages, so just scroll down until you see The word 'Norton' in highlights. - Accessing and saving images by John Butler ( http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:HTQp3CmpheEJ:www.jbutler.org.uk/images.shtml+norton+email+websites+blocks+images&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 ) - PhotoGlossy.com : PhotoGlossy Help section ( http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:wd7JEQ71cfgC:www.photoglossy.com/acatalog/help.htm+cannot+view+images+norton+&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 ) The solution ? - Completely disable Ad Blocking and Privacy Control, and then enable the various settings one by one to see exactly which setting blocks the images. Ad Blocking with Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003 ( http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/pfdocs/2002070914432936) To disable Privacy control 1. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall. 2. On the left side of the screen, click Privacy Control (or Privacy, depending on your version). 3. Deselect Enable Privacy. - If you are able to view images after disabling the above, then these settings are the culprit. Now to determine the exact option that causes this problem. To determine which Privacy settings cause the problem, goto the Custom settings option. 1. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall. 2. On the left side of the screen, click Privacy Control (or Privacy, depending on your version). 3. Click Enable Privacy. 4. Click Custom Level. 5. Make sure that all the settings shown are disabled. Now enable each setting one by one. After enabling a setting, click OK/Apply and checkout webpages with IE. If they still work, enable another setting until you can find the culprit. Hope the above helps. If you need any clarifications, just ask! Best Of Luck! :) =====================================================================
