What is MCA site for?

Photography exhibit at the Chicago MCA

  • I am looking for the name of a photography exhibit as well as the artist name and any further information (e.g. current work) for an exhibit that was at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago possibly in the late 80s or early 90s. It was an exhibit of photo manipulation and was called something like "Rooms of Love" or "12 Rooms of Love". The nature of the photography was similar in fashion to this work "You could leave at any time" at <http://www.seafairy.com/official/neu/home.php?site=manip_thumbs&m_id=3>. The MCA's web site <http://www.mcachicago.org/> has a listing of past exhibits, but does not go back far enough. I have also been unsuccesfull in obtaining info from the MCA or the web.

  • Answer:

Hello. The exhibit was "Les chambres d'amour" ("Rooms of Love") by Bernard Faucon of France. It was displayed as part of a larger exhibition called "Cross References: Sculpture Into Photography." The exhibition was held in 1987-1988 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (and also at the Walker Center in Minneapolis). From the Chicago Tribune (1988) about the exhibition: '...One of the most unexpected sculptures is "A Wave of Snow," by the French artist Bernard Faucon. It is an enormous rectangular glass box filled with hundreds of pounds of white sugar that he sculpts into a wave shape using a hair dryer. It is designed to be seen with a set of 16 24-inch-by-24-inch color photographs from Faucon's series "Rooms of Love," which portray mostly empty rooms where the focus is on light and color.' source: Chicago Tribune, "USING SCULPTURE TO POSE SOME PHOTOGRAPHIC QUESTIONS," Jan 29, 1988. pg. 47 http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/chicagotribune/abstract/24839365.html?did=24839365&FMT=ABS&FMTS=FT&date=Jan+29%2C+1988&author=Catharine+Reeve&desc=USING+SCULPTURE+TO+POSE+SOME+PHOTOGRAPHIC+QUESTIONS According to a German document detailing his career, Faucon's work was featured in the "Cross references" exhibitions in both Minneapolis and Chicago: '1987 ... Walker Art Center-"Cross references, Sculpture into Photography", Minneapolis Museum of Contemporary Art- "Cross references...", Chicago' www.bdap.de/pdfartist/faucon.pdf A French web page has a biography of Bernard Faucon and some photos: http://www.agence-vu.com/fr/photographes/default.asp?Photographes=36 A Dutch web page also has some of Faucon's photos, including a couple from "Les chambres d'amour": http://www.xs4all.nl/~geraci/faucon/faucon.html It seems that a book of Faucon's "Chambres d'amour" has been published. A couple copies are listed at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/2841030792/ Amazon France also sells the book and has a cover photo: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/2841030792/ A 1987 edition is also available on Abebooks.com http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetailsPL?bi=208989981 Abebooks also has a copy of the "Cross References" exhibition catalog published in 1987 by the Walker Center in Minneapolis: http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=259413868 ---------- search strategy: chicago tribune archives: "rooms of love" 1987, 1988, etc "bernard faucon" "Sculpture into Photography" "bernard faucon" "chambres d'amour" chicago I hope this helps.
