What does Latvia think of the EU?

  Latvia is a geographic territory. As such, it does not think. It's inhabitants and members of it's government think, but as with any country, all will never agree on any one given issue, hence your question is impossible to answer. We can say that on September 20 2003, Latvians went to the polls and voted in a national referendum to join the EU. With a voter turnout of 1,010,467 or 72.5% of elegible voters and 67.5% of the vote for as compared to 32.5 against, we can say that on that date in history at least, the majority of Latvians in general were positive. Since then, the popularity of the EU, as that of politicians, goes up and down depending on events and the perceived role of the EU in those events. Especially low points in the popularity of the EU amongst the general population have been related to human rights norms Latvia was not ready for being imposed as a result of EU norms and a reduction in support (subsidies) paid to Latvian farmers as compared to agricultural porducers in older EU countries.
