How does an lcd display driver work?

Answer:
Not too sure but I think lcd display drivers apply a constantly reversing dc voltage across the lcd.The voltage reverses 60 times a second to prevent damage to the lcd.Note that I stated a CONSTANTLY REVERSING DC VOLTAGE & not an AC VOLTAGE.There's a difference! No current actually passes through the lcd, which has 2 electrodes on it marked SEGMENT & COMMON,between which the voltage is applied.
