What is the average lifespan of a hard disk?

Is there software that can determine the lifespan of a hard disk?

  • Answer:

Well there is the Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or S.M.A.R.T., is a monitoring system for computer hard disks to detect and report on various indicators of reliability, in the hope of anticipating failures. It is installed on most drives since like 1996. I'm using HDD Health available from, http://www.panterasoft.com/ now and also HD Tune the freeware version from http://www.hdtune.com/ is very good. Nothing is 100% but it may give you an idea of major impending problems.

Accidents happen (nudges, drops etc), there is no way to reliably forcast a disk's lifespan. It is possible however, under "normal" circumstances with some newer Western Digital Drives to tell. They usually ship with Data Lifeguard, these days. Upon boot up, when it's installed, it will let you know if sectors on the disk may become or are, unstable.

Failure of a hard disk can happen from a number of unexpected problems. Hard disks are cheap now-a-days. I keep an extra hard disk to backup important files.
