My 1994 Golf died with the battery light on when going in reverse. I put it in first gear and neutral with same result. My gas gauge is above red, and when I drive it at low speeds it shudders sometimes. What could be wrong?

Something in your charging system is bad. Go to a local autoparts store and have your alternator and battery tested for free. They should be able to tell you whether you need a new battery or alternator.
