How to open xls file?

In Excel 2003, one file was "split" into two windows (file.xls:1 and file.xls:2). How do I merge them back into one window (file.xls)?

  • Answer:

This is no trick at all, and external software is not required. This is a simple feature in Excel, though not always well understood. Open the file, which will contain the two windows you describe: file.xls:1 and file.xls:2. Close one of the windows, either file.xls:1 or :2 (it doesn't matter to Excel which you close, but one may have different formatting from the other, so it may make a difference to YOU!). Now save the file and close it. Only the single instance you saved should appear next time you open the file again. PS: You got to this point in the first place because someone selected Window / New Window from the standard menu, and then saved the file in that state. It's not a problem at all, now that you know.

Try this program, download it at: http://www.nonags.com/files/redirect/?http://www.gdgsoft.com/files/gsplits.exe It splits programs into smaller pieces to fit on floppy disks but it also reassembles programs and files back together, try it out. Once you download and install it, open it up and look for the "unite" button on the top and click it. You should be able to figure it out from there. Good luck.
