Where do the starters stand at the tip-off?

If you needed to plan a dinner (stand up or sit down- your choice) for between 8 and 16 people, what would you serve from starters to dessert? Drinks?

  • Answer:

8-16 is a pretty broad range, so I'd keep it casual so that leftovers (if it turned out to be only 8) were easy to deal with. I love chili parties... here's what I'd do... Starters are veggies and dip, but include some things beyond the carrot/celery/broc options - cherry tomatoes, snow peas, red bell pepper strips, jicama, radishes, blanched green beans. Also, if you end up having a ton of leftovers, you can make soup or stir-fry. Main course - two kinds of chili - favorite traditional red bean/meat and a white bean/chicken. Serve with sides of shredded cheese, sour cream, green onions, and hot sauce. Those little oyster crackers are always fun too. Again, the chili leftovers can be frozen or keep for a long time in the fridge. The other advantage to chili is people can wander in and out, serve themselves, use disposable bowls and utensils even! Dessert - chocolate is always fun. Bake brownies from a mix, but dissolve a tablespoon of instant coffee into the water before you stir it all up. Makes for great flavor. Offer those alongside a tray of fruit like grapes and strawberries. Fingerfood like that goes really fast. And again, the leftovers keep or freeze well. Drinks - Lots of cold beer, root beer, cokes or tea, and water. I've done this for Superbowl parties and it's always a hit. :) Have fun at your party! :)
