What's the formula of gauge pressure?

I HAVE A 95 GMC W/ A 305 V-8 THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE READS 5 LBS PRESSURE WHEN IDOLING BUT THE TRUCK RUNS FINE.IT HAS A NEW OIL PUMP. IT DONT BURN OIL,OR LEAK. WHATS WRONG WITH THIS THING?

  • Answer:

It is normal for older engines to read low oil pressure at idle. What does it read at 1500-2000 rpm? Anything over 40 lbs would be normal for an engine of this age. You may also want to verify the accuracy of the dash gauge by hooking a mechanical pressure gauge to the port where your existing sending unit is now.
