What French cities do you recommend to visit?

What cities would you recommend for me to visit in Eastern USA and why do you recommend them to a tourist? (not hypothetical, I am planning a trip this summer!)

  • Answer:

Go to DC. It's our nation's capital! But really, it has a lot to offer the tourist. People come from everywhere to see the monuments that are there. It has the National Zoo (which has free admission), a lot of very interesting museums that contain just about everything. I like the atmosphere, and the culture that surrounds it. It is a really fun place to spend a day in, I used to go all of the time. And Ocean City, Maryland is a nice place to visit, as well. It has nice beaches, and the best part is probably the boardwalk, which is almost 3 miles long, and walking down by the beach on it has to be one of my favorite parts of even going. It has a lot of little souveneir shops, good restaurants, and you can do a lot of activities there. (Parasailing, ride in biplanes, commercial sppedboat, jetski, etc.) At night time, there a lot of street performers (erm... boardwalk performers, rather). The best ones are the ones that live there (you can tell because the city gives them badges/id clips) and they all do different things. I've seen bellydancers, trumpet players, violinists, bagpipe players, puppeteer, magicians. You name it. You can always venture out into the rest of the city to do other things, too. There are some outlet stores, and clubs, and whatnot. It's a really nice place.

Northern or Southern cities? I enjoy Boston, NYC, and DC. In the south, Raleigh, Charleston, and Savannah are awesome.

If you're wanting to travel out of NY and you have ten days then the NY, Boston, DC "package" is very cool. Especially if you like trains. There's EASY train access to both DC and Boston out of NY. The Inner Harbor in Baltimore (north of DC/ 3hrs from NY Penn Station). can be a cool place to lunch.

Fun tourist locations for history buffs that can be visited en route between big cities: Newport, RI (dining, sightseeing, nice weather) Mystic, CT (historic seaport with old sailing ships) Charlottesville, VA (UVA, Monticello, dining) Williamsburg, VA (historic re-enactments, Busch gardens) Sturbridge, MA (Sturbridge Village)

The northeast and mid-atlantic are great because you can visit a succession of interesting cities within a few days. I would hit: Boston NYC Philadelphia PA Dutch Country (maybe Baltimore, but only for a crab dinner and a tour of Ft McHenry) Washington, D.C. (at least two days if not three) Alexandria, VA I can not speak for the southeast, as I have only lived down here for a few months but I hear Charlotte, NC and Charleston, SC are great.

This Daley has a new bundle of joy

St. Augustine, Florida. Contrary to the claim much publicized, Jamestown is not the nations oldest city. Besides on the ocean with beautiful beaches and parks, there is much to see and do. (And some of the best Bed and Breakfasts you will find anywhere.) You are just a short drive from the TPC world famous golf course, the World Golf Village, and Sawgrass (if a golf fan), and beautiful world class beaches north and south, with Amelia Island and Cumberland Island in the north, to Daytona and Playalinda in the south. If you can make the excursion to Canaveral National Seashore, you will find 26 miles of unspoiled and pristine beaches with no telephone poles, electric lines, houses, anything. Just south of St. Augustine on A-1A is a little noticed National Seashore that has rock formations more like the moon or Mars, the most unusual formations from New York to Key West. And there are sights and attractions and restaurants galore (for lunch you can't beat the Gypsy Cab Company, and not the crowds and prices at dinner, either). A few hours from Disney World and Universal, both of which you should set aside time for as well. Hope this helps. Enjoy your visit.

Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C. and best of all Philly! (Philadelphia. Make sure you stop at Vinny's #1 favorite restaurant while in Philly. http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/
