How to cut an orchid stem?

The stem of my Phalaenopsis orchid is bent where the flowers are, how do you properly splint an orchid, or should i just cut off the stem, and let it regrow in the next bloom cycle.

  • Answer:

If your Orchid is NOT in bloom you may cut the stem off leaving 2-3 inches remaining above the plant. This is best done when the stem has had time to "die back" and has turned brown and dried. This ensures the nutrients go back to the roots of the plant. If however the Orchid is in bloom, you best bet would be to carefully insert a small bamboo stake (the green ones found in a garden center)into the plant close to the stem as possible without breaking the roots. Secure the Orchid stem to it with a small plastic "butterfly" clip used for children's hair.
