Why won’t Bill Gates just select 100 people a year at Christmas to give a million dollars to? I would, would you?

Why should he? Why dont you take 100 people from the phone book, completely at random and give them 10 dollars each? Because you dont want to! You would prefere to have that money with you not someone else! 100 million dollars is alot of money, even for someone as rich as he is! He earnt it, it is his. Would I give it away? Hell NO! It would be my money, I would keep every little bit of it.

Because most people would squander a million dollars! I believe Bill Gates takes the correct approach in dispensing his millions through various charitable foundations that he and his wife have established as well as philanthropic endeavors that interest them. I was thinking last night that if I had millions, one of the first things I would like to do is set up a kind of camp facility in the country for abandoned and neglected dogs and cats that are destined for the euthanasia chamber. I think they would be alot more appreciative than most people would be.

I wouldn't, because money changes people. Yes, some change for the better, and do wonderous and charitable things with it. Look at lottery winners, however, and how many of them won a million, and were broke within a year. Now maybe if I scouted some universities, and researched to find 100 students who were digging pennies out of thier freinds couch to get a can of spaghettios for supper, because it was taking every penny they had to get through college, and they had the hard work, diligence, grades, and were actually suffering, (doing without many of the basic neccessities) to get a degree, so they could better themselves, and have a better life for them (or thier families), and they had the real potential to possibly make a difference in the world, or at least make a serious contibution to it, then I'd say "Dude... here ya go! Let me help you out with that!"

How do you warrant who the 100 people will be? His neighbors? Do they have to be needy? Do they have to live in a certain state? Do they have to submit an essay as to why they should get the money? Its easier to give the money to an organization that is already helping out people who need help than to try and single out 100 people and overload them with money and instant tax consequences. I think its great that he isn't hoarding the money. First thing I'd do with the million is put some aside for taxes (!@# taxes) then get rid of my debt, my in-laws debt, and my parents debt (not talking house payments) then set up some trusts for my kids and put some away to gain interest on as a nice healthy supplemental income while I still work (still need health insurance).

He has made his money, he dispenses it the way he sees fit and that is his choice. It also seems to be true that he uses his wealth for the good of society, both charitably and by employment. Good on Him I say!
