How do mosquito repellents work?

I love the outdoors. I hate mosquitoes. I hate harsh chemicals. I am poor and cannot afford a fancy 1000 watt bug zapper - plus that's just not necessary. Does anyone have any 'homemade' mosquito repellents that work well?

  • Answer:

My grandmother, an Avon lady, swore that Avon's skin so soft kept mosquitoes away. It most likely does since it clogs bathtub drains, cleans scuff marks off linoleum floors etc etc etc If you’re asking how to keep them out of your yard, it’s impossible really. You can clean out gutters or anywhere where water collects; can’t make your neighbors do it though. Have you tried using fans? The little devils have trouble flying against a steady stream of air. You can try eating lots of garlic and or onion. You could try making friends who have a penchant for foods laden with such seasonings. It’s really hard to say since you haven’t explained the circumstances behind your question. The fan idea does have some scientific principle behind it though. Maybe that’s your answer?

I haven't tried it, but I've from multiple sources that dryer sheets work. Supposedly you rub yourself down and (as long as you don't get wet) you should be good to go.

Some oils, like tea tree oil, can be applied straight on to your skin. Others, try combining with some olive oil and spreading it on. The olive oil itself will deter mosquitoes. Essential oils to try: Eucalyptus, citronella, catnip, or even basil. Eucalyptus and citronella make a nice, effective combination Oil your skin. Mosquitoes are obsessive about keeping their wings grease-free.

I just burn green leafy things in a giant 3' wide bowl and the smoke drives them batty, but a lot of fire departments in the city hate this. They basically don't like acidic smells. Just don't eat bananas, because they love the smell of potassium-laden flesh.

I like Citronella candles, and bug spray. I'm not rich either, and both of these things help alot.
