Easy fly to tie for beginners that requires very little material?

How do you partition a harddrive? I have read that downloading Linus requires this. Would a portable harddrive be a viable alternative? What version of Linus would be best for beginners?

  • Answer:

Semantics apart - Linus/Linux, you need to be really careful installing Linux on a PC that already has Windows. Why not have a look at Knoppix, which runs from CD and avoids the partitioning issue altogether. Admittedly it isn't as fast as an OS installed onto your hard drive, but you'll be able to decide whether you like it. http://www.knoppix.net/ If you do decide to install Linux onto your hard drive be prepared to format your drive, install Linux and then install Windows. Partitioning software is included with just about all Linux distros.
