Who is the best songwriter of all time?

John lennon is the best song writer of all times. He started the beatles he wrote most of the songs. He is greater than bob dylan for a fact!I am sure if he was still alive people would not be saying that bob dylan is better or that john couldn't have done it without paul. John kicks anybodys ass! Oh and Paul is better than bob dylan!

Bob Dylan,no contest.Many have had a few great songs but dylan has had hundreds."blowin in the wind" "mr tambourine man" "like a rolling stone" "all along the watchtower" "knockin' on heavens door" and "jokerman" just to name a few. A true Lyrical genius!

I'd put Warren Zevon right up there w/the best.

I definitely already know about the "greats" in pop music (I'm excluding film/theatre and jazz songwriters from the list) (The Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc.) and am highly aware of how subjective/qualitative that list is. If you try making a list of best composers of classical and film music, you still get some subjective differences of opinion among the most knowledgeable of musicians-its the some with pop music. Instead of attempting to list the "best" songwriters, I'll list my 10 favorite songwriters and groups (up to this point in my life) that have written their own music (which emphasize the soft rock and funk genres, along with one LDS pop songwriter), and undoubtedly, some of the "greats" will be present: 1.) Burt Bacharach 2.) Earth Wind & Fire 3.) Air Supply 4.) Christopher Cross 5.) Michael McLean 6.) England Dan & John Ford Coley 7.) Lionel Richie 8.) Stevie Wonder 9.) Bee Gees 10.) Chicago *Karen Carpenter is my favorite female pop singer. Her and Richard (The Carpenters) would be in my top 10 list, but they are more known for their lush performances of music written by other songwriters. So they have an "honorary" first place, tied with Bacharach.
