    "data over cable service interface" is just a cable modem. This service, where you get your internet over your cable, has become very popular. The 'cable modem' is the device that takes the data to/from your computer and puts it on the cable (coax) wire. The cable modem was initaially held to an IEEE standard known as 802.14. But that went away in favor of DOCSIS, which was actually developed by cable providers rather than a bunch of suited engineers that didn't really know the industry (IEEE). The DOCSIS standard ensures that cable modems/systems don't interfere with the CATV system, can handle a certain amount of noise, etc... pretty standard telecommunications fare.
