Why is my mosquito bite spreading?

If you scratch AROUND the mosquito bite (or spider bite) by at least a centimeter or two, are you still "spreading" it or making it worse?

  • Answer:

Mosquito and spider bites don't spread the way things like poison oak does. Mosquito bites get itchy and irritated due to the body having an allergic reaction to the proteins that the mosquito gives off. (Not as sure about spider bites, but it's likely similar.) Poison oak is caused by actual oil, urushiol, being deposited on the skin, and is absorbed by the skin. This is actually a poison, and the body's immune system rushes to fight it. When you itch a spider or mosquito bite, you're just irritating the reaction that's already there. When you scratch a poison oak rash, it actually spreads the oil and causes the poison to spread over your skin (causing a bigger rash). So even itching around a mosquito or spider bite may irritate it further.

in my long experience with mosquitoes (but no medical knowledge) scratching even around the bite does spread it even more. better use a hydrocortisone cream that doesn't do miracles but helps;)

I would just keep alchol or peroxide on your bites , and they have a itch cream you can get , that should help + 5
