Is there really such a thing as global warming?

Is global warming really a bad thing? Are longer growing seasons destructive to the earth?

  • Answer:

No, they are not destructive the the Earth. The Medieval Warm Period, which was warmer than we are today, was a period of great prosperity for Europe. There was a surplus of food which enabled them to devote labor to the construction of many of the great cathedrals. It was also as a result of the abundant harvests, the incidence of disease was much lower. It was during the Little Ice Age, which followed the Medieval Warm Period, that famines became common and plagues devastated populations regularly. *********** Addendum: Let me weigh in here by stating that personally, I am getting tired of this debate. I have posted many answer stating numerous sources that support my side of the argument. Others site sources that support their side of the story. The result is that none of us is convincing the others of the validity of our positions. We just keep going around and around in circles here. So, what's the point? Let me just point something out a few of things here. First is the following article (http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/press/archive/pr0310.html). Once again the alarmist are wrong. The 20th century is NOT the hottest century on record. Yes, Stableboy, there is a big difference between a temperature change of 1° and 4° C/century. It is the alarmists that keep throwing around the 4° figure so that they can say that the rate of warming is unprecedented. The fact is that the experts keep revising that number down so that they now say 1°/century. That is not an unprecedented rate of warming. Next, you may note that one of the things that is happening is that the alarmist are moving away from the term “global warming” and moving to calling it “climate change”. The reason for this is because they want to cover their bases in the event that the catastrophic global warming does not occur. By talking about “climate change” they can continue to blame humans even if the temperatures start to drop again as some are predicting will happen. This article (http://www.businessandmedia.org/specialreports/2006/fireandice/fireandice.asp) documents over a century media hype concerning the subject of climate change. The experts of each period were convinced that catastrophic climate change was on the way, but they kept changing their minds as to whether we were heading into a new ice age or going to burn up. Finally, the alleged consensus does not exist. There are thousands of scientists that disagree with the contention that humans are causing global warming (http://www.oism.org/pproject/s33p41.htm). However, this side of the argument does not get the press that the alarmist get. They are usually dismissed as being shills for industry. Therefore, their findings can’t be trusted because they are in the pockets of the polluters. However, these same people don’t talk about innate bias in those scientist whose research is funded by environmental groups who have and interest in promoting human caused global warming. So, I am getting tired of this debate. I have written all of this before. I don’t get the idea that we are changing anyone’s minds. So, I think that it is time to just let it drop. We are not going to figure this out here. ******************** Here is some more information on this: 55.5 MB high resolution color pdf (http://www.jpands.org/vol12no3/robinson600.pdf) 870 KB low resolution black and white pdf (http://www.jpands.org/vol12no3/robinson.pdf)

You'd enjoy the book Cool It by Bjorn Lumborg, a liberal environmentalist, who says that although global warming is happening it is not a crisis, and is manageable, and we can more profitably treat the symptoms of it than attempt to prevent it. For instance sea levels will rise--a whole foot. They also rose a foot in the 20th century. We survived. Global warming will cause some more malaria, but we can prevent all of it and then some by spending a tiny amount on DDT, which has proven to be both safe and effective. Lots of other good stuff in his book.

I believe the global crisis is happening right now. I'm offended so much money is spent on speculation of what the climate may be in 100 years, when people are starving, dying of disease, a child is orphaned every few seconds due to HIV/AIDS/, 1/3 to 1/4th of high school graduates in the US are functionally illiterate, our children must use clear backpacks and enter their schools through metal detectors. Where the heck are our priorities? I hate to use a popular writer's argument, but at least he has a scientific background, but how much could someone from 1907 have affected our current environment. Fear sells.

I think "global warming" is a bunch of bullshit.

I believe it's worth mentioning that the increasingly preferred term is no longer "global warming", but is instead "Global Climate Change", inferring that there is a cooling component to whatever change is currently affecting the earth. The arbitrated longer growing season may occur in only certain locations for periods of other-than-permanent duration. In short, we shouldn't claim to know the outcome of the weather as we watch the changes occur. A few years ago, in Ireland, older people predicted a forthcoming mini Ice Age based on their observations, which stand in contrast to the notion of "global warming" but might be supported by an increased cooling/warming cyclic rate. In truth, as wonderful as they are, those people didn't know either, so as long as we have a breathable atmosphere and some semblance of a life-supporting environment, and central air, we should all get by somehow. I'm not concerned.

Global warming is bad for the world, but the nuclear crisis in the world is much a bigger threat to the world, first we have to take care of all terrorists an than you can think about threats of 30-40 years ahead.

Glen, I thank you for posting. Don't feel that it is always pointless, I was one of the "alarmists" until about a year and a half ago when I really started to look at the data and the funding and listened to reasonable scientific opinion that didn't try to insult me with a patronizing attitude of believe me because I know what's best arrogance. Its in the upper 80's here in Baltimore and its well into fall. U tell me if the seasons are getting longer.

I can't see where global warming would lead to longer growing seasons. Has no one thought to factor in more destructive hurricanes, less annual rainfall, and the resulting draughts? People who say there is no global warming have their heads in the sand on the beaches of that now-famous river, Denial. Evidence is everywhere if you just admit that it is what it is. Chicago marathon cancelled on Saturday because of 90 degree heat in October? Record-setting temperatures in most major cities in the northeast this Fall? Hospitals and ERS workers unable to keep up with heat stroke patients? But don't you worry, kids, no global warming happening on this planet. You just keep on driving your Hummers and burning your fossil fuels & buying products made by companies that are destroying the environment. No problems--you'll be dead and gone - but your grandchildren will curse you for the havoc you wrought on the world they still have to live in.
