What is the salary of a lawyer?

What is the average starting salary of a lawyer in a large firm compared to the average salary of a lawyer in private practice?

  • Answer:

Starting salary at a large firm is $120-160k per year. However, they generally have a billable hour requirement of 2000-2400 per year. This translates into $38-50 per hour worked. Private practice varies widely. There are many solos that earn six figures, as well as many that earn seven figures. However, there are also many that $50-80k per year. However, most solo's make the same per hour (or more) as the big firms, but they get paid less because they work far less hours.

refining your skills to become the best or finding the your nitch in the markey place should be placed above all else including money. Once this is done the rewards will soon follow.

I have resolved to designate a portion of my spare time to making sure that a link to the *real legal job market discussion exists on sites like this (to push back against the BS numbers the glossly law school catalogs and student loan company websites creatively carve out for you) Don't drink the fruit punch!! http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2007/09/24/the-dark-side-of-legal-job-market/ http://abajournal.com/news/law_school_secret_bad_job_market/ http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1202427382685 Don't forget this one... http://temporaryattorney.blogspot.com/

The profits (fees+bene's+share of awards-costs) of lawyers in private practice are ... well ... private. But, unless he is (a) a mob lawyer, (b) an old-money blue-blood estate lawyer, or (c) a famous trial lawyer, the typical lawyer in private practice (either solo, or with a single partner) nets less than the starting salary of top tier law school grads at big law firms - which I believe now is up to about $85k + benefits. But if you've been at it for a while (10+ years) and have built a solid reputation and client base, you can do very well -- just judging by the cars they buy, the houses they live in, and the clubs they belong to.
