I'm getting my first car, it'll have to be used and my parents want one that runs well, gets good gas mileage, and is safe. I'd love to get an SUV or truck, just something that'll fit my friends and my stuff. What's a good car with those specifications?

Answer:
You will hate me for this but... SUVs are VASTLY overrated. I have had (and do have) something with more cargo space than many SUVs, more comfortable rear seats, and about 50% better gas mileage. A station wagon. I have NEVER seen somebody cram a couch into any SUV that got better than 15 MPG, or even have enough space to try without LOTS of rope. I've done it with a Honda Civic 4WD Wagon that got 32 MPG in combined driving. I have never seen a truck with back seats large enough for an adult that got over 12 MPG. Enough said on that. Oh, and your stuff will get wet when it rains. Station wagons are sometimes available in a "sport" model; more often than trucks or SUVs. Look at the WRX ;) SUVs are not as safe as you'd think. Too easy to roll and the liability insurance is iffy since you are more likely to kill someone else. There ARE cool wagons if you look.

Try a Scion xB (wagon). I am on my second one and I love it. It's roomy, gets about 31-34 MPG, and is for all intents and purposes a Toyota. Toyota is tops in reliability. You can pick a used on up fairly cheap. The one pictured is a 2008 model, the older ones look like shoe boxes :)

As a rule of thumb, all SUV's and trucks get lousy mileage. Nor are they particularly safe. Get something like a Toyota hatchback or a Subaru Forester, and you'll be able to carry more passengers than most pickups, and you'll find there's plenty of cargo room for most purposes. Either of these will be easy on the gas compared to SUV's/Trucks, but the Toyota will give higher MPGs, while the Subaru has better safety ratings.

Good gas mileage and SUV just don't go together unless you're getting a hybrid. Safety and SUV doesn't go together unless you're getting a Hummer (H1). Hummer and good gas mileage don't go together. If you want something that is relatively safe, will give you decent gas mileage and will fit a bunch of friends, I'd go with the Honda Element.

I hope you realize that SUVs are gas-guzzlers

Get a 6 cylinder extended cab truck. They carry a lot of payload and are a hell of a lot safer then any of those tinker toy cars running around now.

I would go with a used Honda Accord. Those are pretty big and comfortable, they get pretty good gas mileage, and are pretty safe. I have a friend with one that has over 100,000 miles on it and it still runs great.

hmm, the Toyota Rav-4 sounds like it might be right up your alley. Toyota is well known for quality, long-lasting, low-maintenance vehicles that usually get very good gas mileage. I've not driven a Rav-4 myself, but I've been driving Toyotas for years, and they are definitely built very well. I'm pretty sure they get something like 24 miles per gallon, which is pretty good for an SUV. good luck in the search!
